Boy-Led Since 1985
Troop 839 was chartered in Kingwood, Texas in 1985, and has been going places ever since.
We are a boy-led troop: our Scouts elect their own Senior Patrol Leader, run their own meetings, and plan their own program — with experienced adult leaders providing guidance, safety, and the occasional dutch-oven cobbler. Our troop is committed to developing leadership skills, fostering friendships, and instilling the values of the Scout Oath and Law in a safe, welcoming environment.
Since our founding, more than 300 Scouts have earned the rank of Eagle with Troop 839 — a legacy you can explore in our Eagle’s Nest.
How Troop 839 Works
⛰ Weekly Meetings
We meet every Monday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at First Presbyterian Church of Kingwood, 5520 Kingwood Drive — except the Monday following the monthly camping activity. Meetings run from mid-August through early June.
⛷ Monthly Campouts
One weekend a month during the school year (except summer), the troop camps at BSA camps, state parks, and national parks — all within roughly 200 miles of Houston. We depart Friday evening and return Sunday.
🌞 Summer Camp & Beyond
Each summer the troop spends a full week at a BSA summer camp, and older Scouts take on high-adventure trips that push their skills — and their horizons — further.
The Aims of Scouting
The mission of Scouting America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.
The Scout Oath
On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.
The Scout Law
A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.
In practice, that mission looks like a 12-year-old leading his patrol’s menu planning, a 14-year-old teaching knots to a new Scout, and a 17-year-old organizing a service project that changes a corner of Kingwood for good.

Every spring, Troop 839 runs its famous Kingwood Bark Mulch fundraiser — Scouts and parents delivering mulch across the neighborhood. It funds our trailer, our gear, and a year’s worth of adventures, and it’s been a Kingwood tradition for decades.
