Trail to First Class
Four ranks, one goal: a Scout who can take care of himself — and the Scout next to him — in the outdoors.
Every Eagle Started Here
1 · Scout
Learn the Oath, Law, sign, salute, and square knot — and what Scouting is all about.
2 · Tenderfoot
First campout skills: pitch a tent, whip a rope, treat blisters, start getting fit.
3 · Second Class
Navigation, wild edibles, cooking, swimming — the outdoors starts to feel like home.
4 · First Class
The complete outdoorsman: lead a hike, plan a menu, handle emergencies, give back.
Troop Guides Walk With You
New Scouts advance in rank toward First Class with the help of Troop Guides — older Scouts assigned to each new patrol as mentors.
Most requirements get signed off in the field: your first tent pitched on the orientation campout, your first patrol meal cooked over a camp stove, your five-mile hike on a Saturday morning trail. Advancement in Troop 839 isn't homework — it's what naturally happens when you show up and dive in.
Email our advancement team at advancement@troop839.com — they track every sign-off, schedule boards of review, and make sure no Scout's progress falls through the cracks.
