Crossing over from Cub Scouts is a big step — from a family-run pack to a troop the Scouts run themselves.

Troop 839 is boy-led with adult guidance. We meet almost every Monday night from mid-August through early June at First Presbyterian Church of Kingwood. We camp one weekend a month during the school year, spend a full week at summer camp every year, and offer high-adventure opportunities for older Scouts.

New Scouts aren't thrown to the wolves (they just howl with them sometimes): every new patrol gets Troop Guides — experienced Scout mentors who help you advance toward First Class. Over 300 of our Scouts have gone on to earn Eagle.

Join the Troop

Complete the Youth Application and the BSA Health & Medical Form. Parents: grab the Adult Application and Talent Survey too — this troop runs on parent power.

Step 3 · Late March

Investiture Ceremony

New Scouts are formally welcomed at an investiture ceremony. New patrols are formed and Troop Guides — your Scout mentors — are assigned.

When and where does the troop meet?

We meet almost every Monday night from mid-August through early June, 7:00–8:39 PM, at First Presbyterian Church of Kingwood, 5520 Kingwood Drive. The one exception: we skip the Monday right after the monthly campout so everyone can dry out their tents and catch up on sleep.

How often does the troop camp?

One weekend a month during the school year, plus a week-long summer camp each year. Campouts are at BSA camps, state parks, and national parks within about 200 miles of Houston. We depart Friday evening and return Sunday.

What does "boy-led" actually mean?

The Scouts elect a Senior Patrol Leader who runs the troop with his leadership team. Scouts plan the meetings, choose campout destinations, plan menus, and teach skills. Trained adult leaders supervise for safety and mentor from the sidelines. It's messier than adult-run — and that's exactly the point.

How does my Scout advance?

New Scouts work toward First Class with help from their Troop Guides — see the Trail to First Class. After that, the Road to Eagle adds merit badges, leadership positions, and service. Over 300 Troop 839 Scouts have earned Eagle since 1986.

What's expected of parents?

More hands make lighter packs. Parents drive to campouts, serve on the committee, become merit badge counselors, and some join as registered adult leaders. Fill out the Adult Talent Survey and we'll find the spot where you'll do the most good.

What will it cost?

Annual registration plus modest monthly campout fees (food and site costs). Our annual Kingwood Bark Mulch fundraiser helps Scouts offset the cost of camp and high adventure — Scouts who work the fundraiser earn their way. Contact the Committee Chair for current figures.

My son isn't coming from a Cub Scout pack. Can he still join?

Absolutely. Scouts BSA is open to all boys ages 11–17 (or 10 with Arrow of Light or fifth grade completed). No Cub Scout experience required — Troop Guides will get him up to speed fast.
